Strengthening Small Businesses Ecosystems
The Goodyear Tract, one of the oldest and largest industrial areas in Los Angeles, spans 205 acres and supports over 200 companies, providing employment for approximately 4,000 people. With lower property costs compared to other manufacturing zones, the tract plays a vital role as both an economic entry point for small businesses and a job base for South Los Angeles residents.

In partnership with LISC, Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) launched a project in 2020 to organize and strengthen the Goodyear Tract as a hub for small business activity. As project lead, I conducted a comprehensive analysis using design research methods—including land use assessments, mapping visualizations, on-site interviews, surveys, and literature reviews. My role centered on engaging directly with business owners to identify challenges and opportunities, and on synthesizing these insights with spatial and economic data to inform actionable recommendations.
The project also explored potential for business cluster development and culminated in a detailed report outlining findings and implementation strategies. I oversaw all aspects of outreach and engagement, data analysis, and strategic direction, ensuring the project responded to community needs and supported long-term ecosystem growth.
