Dhanbad Urban Roads
Dhanbad, often referred to as the Coal Capital of India, is one of Jharkhand’s largest industrial towns, with nearly half of the area under the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation dedicated to coal mining. As part of a proposed World Bank loan, a portion of funding was allocated to improve the city’s road network—including key junctions and public transport infrastructure—based on priorities outlined in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan and informed by extensive stakeholder consultations.

As part of a research team from NYU Wagner, I contributed to an impact assessment of the Phase 1 Dhanbad Roads Project. This involved site visits across multiple project areas, stakeholder interviews, and a review of relevant planning documents. The research focused on identifying both the physical and social implications of proposed infrastructure changes, with particular attention to access, mobility, and equity considerations.
The team produced a set of recommendations aimed at guiding the implementation of the project in a way that balances technical goals with community needs and long-term sustainability.
